Holidays
Holidays tell us a lot about the worldview, values, and beliefs of people in a certain culture. When learning about a holiday, it is important to ask three questions:
- What is the meaning of this holiday or why did they first celebrate it? This is perspective.
- What activities are involved and what do they mean? These are practices.
- What symbols or objects are used to celebrate and what do these mean to the people celebrating? These are products.
It is also important to realize that when people first began to celebrate the holiday, there may have been certain meanings which have now changed, even though the activities or symbols remain the same. This is especially true of Hispanic countries that may have the roots of holidays in indigenous traditions, but were mixed with Spanish beliefs through the Catholic church. So, the activities and symbols are frequently a mix of Indian and Spanish customs.
