Newscasts

Fifth and Sixth Grade students at Emmet D. Williams Elementary create a 15 minute, bi-weekly newscast for the entire EDW community to watch at the end of the week. There are many roles that students are involved with, including student editors, field journalists, anchor people, technology specialists and production supervisors.  Students apply at the beginning of the year for the job they would like to be a part of, describing their strengths and interests for that position, and then throughout the year we rotate students to ensure all students have a chance to be a part of this great experience.

This program is beneficial to students in many ways, including building leadership skills, improving communication abilities, and exploring and extending their understanding of basic technology as well as digital video and sound mixing, and using programs such as iMovie extensively.

We tape our broadcasts "live" the day before the broadcast.  Segments in our broadcasts range from typical items such as birthdays and this day in history, to the "65 Second Debate", interviews of staff and students for special events, our "get to know…" segment highlighting staff at our building, among other things.
