Influenza-like Illness

We are seeing a recent increase in the number of students with influenza-like illness. Influenza is a contagious respiratory infection and is not the same as the “stomach flu”. Influenza is caused by a virus and can be prevented by an immunization. Everyone older than 6 months of age should get flu vaccine this year, even if you got seasonal flu or H1N1 vaccine last.

Influenza symptoms include:

Fever

Dry cough

Sore throat

Headache

Extreme tiredness

Stuffed-up nose

Body aches

What to do:

  • Get a flu shot
  • Stay away from people who are sick
  • Cover your cough and sneeze
  • Clean your hands often – with soap and water, or a hand sanitizer.
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Rest and drink lots of fluids.
